1870's English Oak Gothic Revival Sideboard; Beveled Mirror & Carved Monogram. Striking and Majestic third-quarter 19th century solid oak sideboard. Part of the Gothic Revival style that was taking hold in England as a reaction to the stark neoclassicism that had been popular since the late 18th century. Medium colored oak, with all of the design hallmarks of the style; trefoil and quatrefoil motifs, Fleur-de-lis, turned spindles, and four elaborate hand-carved monograms in Old English style letters. Few of these have survived.

Starting in the 1830's, Victorian designers started looking up to older classical styles for design inspirations. The Gothic revival is the revival of the Gothic style which was popular in the 12th century. The gothic revival also known as Neo-Gothic is a movement which began England. Its popularity grew rapidly in the early nineteenth century. England was the centre of the revival.

Design elements used in Gothic revival furniture include trefoil and quatrefoil shapes, pointed arches and gargoyles. These are expressed using heavy, intricate carvings on tables, chairs and beds. Heavy wood such as rosewood, oak and walnut are used to construct Gothic revival furniture. Gothic furniture is a distinct and powerful design statement.

The finish is near-mint, although I think it has been refinished at some point in its history. The drawers and doors all work well, and the cellarette slides out smoothly and has most of the antique tea paper that lines it intact. The finish on the top of the base is in excellent condition. The mirror appears to be original and is intact with only minor "aging" to the silvering.

There are losses on both front corners, more on the front left. Not major, but the sharp edge has been worn down, which indicates it is original. There is a single narrow minor age crack on the left side of the base.

A couple of old repairs to the wood. The only real issue of note is that the top, which is a separate piece, leans to the back. It has been braced at some point (see photos) but a more effective job could be done with this to make it absolutely perfect. Overall, a really striking piece, and with very few visible issues. Measurements: 90 tall to the top of the finial.

The base is 38.5 tall. The item will be delivered directly to your residence or business. Please view the total listing as there are more pictures at the bottom of the listing. Please make sure you read all of our ad and view all the photos.
